Extracts from letters written by scholars after visiting my school
Here are some things I absolutely loved. The slate and slate pencil was fantastic and the museum had so many stupefying artefacts. The school anthem was wonderful and you were very talented with your piano and accordian. I learnt to stitch with Miss Sampson and I do it all the time now, I learnt about the red squirrel and the jobs that children did. I hope to come back again soon.

It was a Victorian life time experience. I actually thought I was back in those days. I recommend it to everyone,

I thought Miss North was very Victorian like. Do you ever get sick of being a Victorian?

I am writing this letter because the Victorian School was really cool and fun. I really liked playing with the hoops and I tried and tried again and I managed in the end. Thank you !

I wish I did really go to a Victorian School because it seems to be a place where you have more education and also more fun.

The thing I learned was that the Victorians were very obedient and that they believed in God.

It was very cold in the school which made me feel bad for the Victorian Children because in Winter they must have been frozen!

My favourite part was drawing the feather from a golden eagle which looked really big.

When I entered the classroom I was awestruck by how old fashioned it was. The tortoise stove in the corner really added to the atmosphere. I could feel a sense of musty magic in the air like I had been whisked back in time, and there I sat, surrounded by my friends in their Victorian clothes.

I was surprised at how cold the water was where went to wash our hands. The carbolic soap was horrible. The school was very cold, we are very lucky to have central heating.

Even though I normally don’t like art I really enjoyed drawing from the natural history corner and was really pleased to take away my drawing of a dragonfly.

I didn’t like the toilets because there were spiders in them but overall I very much enjoyed the visit.

It felt really cold in the classroom but not so bad for the people in front of me because they were next to the tortoise stove ………the water we had to wash our hands with was freezing and the soap smelt disgusting. It felt really like we were Victorians and it felt wonderful to be at your school.

Teacher’s Comments

The children keep talking about their visit. I am very impressed by the high standard of authenticity in your schoolroom and museum. You have your own unique approach and it makes your school very special. Thank you.

Your school is such a gem, it is so full of wonderful treasures that I never feel the time we have there is long enough to fully appreciate them. ………from the moment we pass through the gate we FEEL part of another life. It always amazes me how the children are so drawn in – how they sit and respond obeying the expected code. The smell of the fire, the lamp all add to the atmosphere.
The children were quick to pick up the additional information about Victorian life – absent pupils and possible local employment as they ‘live’ their new roles.
The children enjoy the challenge of the new skills – pens – hoops and slates.

A very moving experience starting with the bell beckoning the scholars to morning school ………No Victorian topic could be complete without a visit to this very special Victorian school.

Miss North’s comments

I have now been ‘headmistress’ of my school for 16 years. I am most fortunate to have a wonderful team of helpers – including the rural dean’s wife, the rector’s wife, the rector's sister (a governess in London much of the time) a pupil teacher, a good spinster and of course the Squire. We all feel privileged to have the opportunity to give so many schoolchildren a unique and most memorable experience.
